Constituted 6th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on Dec. 22, 1939. Activated on Feb. 1, 1940. Redesignated 6th Bombardment Squadron, Very Heavy, on March 28, 1944. Inactivated on April 1, 1944. Activated on April 1, 1944. Inactivated on May 20, 1946. Activated in the Reserve on June 15, 1947. Inactivated on June 27, 1949. Consolidated (Sept. 19, 1985) with the 6th Air Refueling Squadron, Medium, which was constituted on April 6, 1951. Activated on April 10, 1951. Inactivated on Aug. 1, 1951. Redesignated 6th Air Refueling Squadron, Heavy, on April 1, 1957. Activated on Nov. 1, 1957. Discontinued, and inactivated, on Jan. 25, 1967. Activated on Jan. 3, 1989. Redesignated 6th Air Refueling Squadron on Sept. 1, 1991.
