Travis AFB Wins General Thomas D. White Award

For the second time in less than nine years, the Restoration Branch of the 60th Civil Engineering Squadron Asset Management Flight has won the General Thomas D. White Restoration Award for having the top environmental restoration program within Air Mobility Command. The award program is designed to recognize outstanding Air Force efforts to preserve and protect the environment. This annual award recognizes the installation conducting the best or most improved restoration program during the previous and current fiscal year.

General Thomas Dresser White (1901 - 1965) was the fourth Chief of Staff of the Air Force from 1957 to 1961. Along with a distinguished career that included command of the Fifth Air Force and Seventh Air Force, he provided early leadership in the establishment of Air Force environmental programs.

The purpose of the General Thomas D. White award competition is to promote excellence in every aspect of Air Force environmental programs. The competition is designed to recognize the efforts of installations and individuals for environmental quality, restoration, pollution prevention, recycling, and conservation of natural and cultural resources.

"Probably the most exciting aspect of this environmental award is that it rewards team, rather than individual, effort," commented Mr. Mark Smith, chief of the Travis environmental restoration branch. "In the end, the team award offers the most satisfaction to the most people."

Mr. Smith went on to outline a few of the factors that led to the winning of this award: He said that, with one exception, all soil cleanup actions have been successfully carried out, and the sediment cleanup program will wrap up by the end of 2010. In addition, Travis AFB has been a leader in the use of green and sustainable treatment technologies that rely on solar power to clean up contaminated groundwater. These technologies reduce the amount of electricity that is consumed by the Travis AFB power grid and the resulting calculated green house gas emissions.
