ST028 - Buildings 363 & 1201

Buildings 363 and 1201 are facilities in the vicinity of several underground fuel storage areas.  One underground storage tank was used for hazardous waste storage.  This fuel farm contained eleven 25,000-gallon fuel tanks from 1948 to 1983; all of these tanks were removed from the site by 1995. The groundwater is contaminated with fuel constituents (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene).  The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) is the lead oversight agency for this petroleum-only contaminated site (POCOS).

In 2008, the Air Force and the RWQCB selected Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) as the final remedy for petroleum contamination at Site ST028.  MNA at Site ST028 consists of two components:
(1) intrinsic bioremediation, and (2) groundwater monitoring to verify the continued effectiveness and protectiveness of the remedy. The monitoring well network at Site ST028 was built in 2007 as part of a POCOS investigation. In 2015, soil, soil gas, and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed during a data gap investigation to assess current site risks.  Analytical results indicated that chemical concentrations in all environmental media meet requirements for site closure under the Water Board's Low-Threat UST Closure Policy.  The Air Force anticipates closing Site ST018 in 2017.
