David Grant USAF Medical Center - PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

The David Grant USAF Medical Center's pharmacy practice residency is an American Society of Health System Pharmacists accredited, one-year program of post-graduate training at Travis AFB, Calif. Resident selection is to be made in the first quarter of the fiscal year. Resident(s) then participate in a general residency orientation program for 2-3 weeks with medical and dental residents beginning early June. The pharmacy residency program officially begins July 1 of each year.

DGMC's Pharmacy Residency program was initiated in 1992. The residency was evaluated by ASHP and received initial accreditation at the completion of the first residency year in 1993, becoming the first accredited pharmacy residency program in a USAF medical facility. Since that time, the program has graduated 22 residents, including 15 active duty Air Force and seven non-affiliated civilian pharmacists.

The Air Force Institute of Technology has sponsored DGMC's residency program since the 2000-2001 residency year for current Air Force officers with two to four years of active duty service. AFIT has recently expanded their sponsorship from one AF pharmacist to three positions, two of which are designated for new Air Force accessions. The residency program was reevaluated by ASHP in 2007-2008 and has received reaccreditation through 2017.

PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Goals and Objectives

The clinical patient care is provided at DGMC, Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care Systems, and some civilian facilities, such as NorthBay Hospital. The Departments of Pharmacy at all facilities offer a wide range of services including internal medicine, long term care, pharmacokinetics, hematology/oncology, cardiology/intensive care, infectious disease, and research activities. DGMC encompasses over 808,475 net square feet with 3,662 rooms, 350 inpatient and 41 aeromedical staging flight beds and 52 dental treatment rooms in the adjacent Arthur J. Sachsel Dental Clinic. DGMC provides full surgical and most medical specialty capabilities.

For the traditional residency, applicants must have earned a Pharm.D. degree or a Bachelor of Science with a minimum of two years pharmacy practice experience, have no more than six years of total active commissioned service (waiverable), be in Career Reserve or Regular Air Force status, and should be eligible to PCS. For the two direct accession residency positions, applicants must have earned a Pharm.D. degree.

All applicants must complete a residency application package that includes: a completed application form, three letters of reference (squadron commander, senior MTF BSC and MTF commander if applying for the traditional residency), academic transcripts, and curriculum vitae. A telephone interview may be required. All selectees will incur an additional two years of service commitment if they choose to attend the residency.
