David Grant USAF Medical Center - Paws for Healing

When can a dog be a CAT? If you've ever roamed the hallways and corridors of David Grant USAF Medical Center over the past decade, you've most likely encountered a special tail wagging creature or two who happen to be an officially registered canine-assisted therapy dog.

Paws for Healing, Inc. is a non-profit organization that evaluates dogs for the canine assisted therapy program and trains their human guardians in the various protocols required prior to visits to various medical facilities throughout Solano, Napa, Sonoma and Marin Counties. PFH, Inc. also provides the necessary evaluation and training of new teams desiring to participate in this rewarding experience.

When the CAT program was reinstated at DGMC in 2003 after a brief hiatus, many of these four-legged and furry friends left lasting impressions on staff and patients alike.

Through the years, memorable canines have wagged and padded their way into the hearts of patients and staff alike around DGMC. They have run the gamut from a small Yorkshire terrier such as Sunglass and the uniform wearing, but now retired "A1C Lolli-Pup" (rank and name says so on her dog tags).

There was also a mid-sized French poodle named "Famous Amos" who has since passed away -- but not before gaining some local notoriety for receiving a Purple Heart -- given to him by a Marine as the wounded warrior transitioned through the 60th Aeromedical Staging Facility. Larger dogs such as a Collie named "Lassie" all the way up to a Rhodesian Ridgeback named "Spike" are also allowed special access into DGMC.

Recent PCS moves and retirements to comfy cushions for a couple of our dedicated canines has forced the CAT program at DGMC to re-em"bark" with a new class of volunteers and their four-legged partners.

Training seminars are held twice a month at the Community Education Center, 1360 Menlo Avenue in Napa. There is a $75 fee to cover the cost of training materials and liability insurance for both the team and the patients.

Applications must be received no later than three weeks prior to a training date. Participants are encouraged to sign up as early as possible as class size is limited and PFH, Inc. trainings quickly fill. Applications for scholarships are available for military personnel or dependents that require financial assistance.

Non-military personnel who wish to volunteer at DGMC will be required to show proof of auto insurance, current vehicle registration and driver's license in order to gain access to the base. Additionally, all dog owners will be required to purchase PFH, Inc. uniforms to identify their canine companions to the DGMC staff.

If you are interested in obtaining an application packet to become a part of this extremely rewarding activity, contact PFH, Inc. at (707) 258-3486, or visit their web site.
