Construction of the SS029 Groundwater Extraction System
Monitoring Well 329 (SS029) represents an open field that is located south of an abandoned taxiway in the south-central portion of the North/East/West Industrial Operable Unit. Aircraft maintenance activities near the well are suspected of contaminating the groundwater with chlorinated solvents.
The Travis AFB Groundwater Record of Decision selected Groundwater Extraction and Treatment (GET) as a final remedy. The contaminated groundwater is treated at the South Base Boundary Groundwater Treatment Plant. Groundwater monitoring data suggest that the downgradient portion of the SS016 solvent plume has merged with the SS029 solvent plume. The Site SS029 GET system provides hydraulic control for the portion of the SS016 plume that is beyond the SS016 GET system. Routine operations and maintenance as well as groundwater monitoring of the final remedy are ongoing.
Soil on the 5.5-acre site is contaminated with Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons. Based on human health and ecological assessments of the potential risks posed by the soil contaminants, the NEWIOU Soil, Sediment, and Surface Water Record of Decision selected No Action for the soil at this site.
