Another observance month is upon us. Another month of activities, social gatherings and fun-filled events geared to highlight awareness towards a particular culture or ethnic background.

But are these activities embracing diversity, or pointing out differences?

Knowledge and understanding are the pathways to accepting differences and lead to the goal of embracing diversity. The relative uniqueness of each individual within a population enriches its culture and history.

Hispanic Heritage Observance Month marks the celebration of a key cultural component of the Air Force. Hispanic-Americans have valiantly fought in every war this nation has been involved in, from the American Revolution to Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.

To date, 43 Hispanic-Americans have been awarded the Medal of Honor "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life, above and beyond the call of duty, in actual combat against an armed enemy force."

Even today, their contributions are invaluable to our success in the Global War on Terrorism.

Hispanic-Americans' contributions can be appreciated throughout Team Travis' mission. From an on-time aircraft departure, to first-class medical care, Hispanic-American Airmen help make it happen every day.

Achievements such as winning the "Best Air Mobility Team" at the 2007 [Air Mobility Command's Expeditionary] Rodeo, to being "America's First Choice" for providing Global Reach are only possible through the countless contributions first-class Airmen, including Hispanic-Americans, provide.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for understanding and recognizing the positive impact Hispanic-Americans have on everyday life.
