Travis hosted its second annual Junior and Senior Summit Tuesday and Wednesday at the Travis Conference Center to confront current issues facing Travis.

Approximately 100 people attended the two-day summit which focused on issues ranging from recognition to building better relationships with the tenant units.

“The summit is designed to get all levels of leadership together and discuss issues that are affecting Travis,” said Capt. Brenden Shaw, summit organizer.

The decision to hold another summit was due to the success of last year’s summit.

“Last year’s summit highlighted problems facing the dorms such as inadequate lighting in the hallways and not having a place to relax and search the internet,” said Captain Shaw.

“These issues were focused on, solutions were considered and many of the problems were taken care of.”

Many of the issues addressed at this year’s summit were taken from the Air Force’s Climate Assessment Survey.

Topics included morale/quality of life, religion in the military, disciplinary actions among cultural demographics/racial and cultural issues and safety.

The summit was divided into two groups: junior members and senior members.

Each group was then divided into subgroups with a specific topic to address.

Each subgroup had a subject matter expert and a facilitator to help keep the group organized and give advice based on experiences and regulations.

“We divided the groups into junior members and senior members because we didn’t want the junior members to be afraid of speaking their opinions and giving their input,” said 1st Lt. Robert Byrd, summit POC.

The groups ideas and solutions were then presented to the wing executive council for consideration.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone, both junior, senior enlisted and officers to put in their input on how to improve the challenges that Travis faces,” said Master Sgt. John Schumann, summit participate.
