Fifty-nine Air Force medical officers ranging from surgeons, family medicine doctors, dentists, radiologists, pharmacists and social workers have successfully completed their graduate medical education residency programs at David Grant USAF Medical Center. Following closely on their heels are 36 new residents who reported to DGMC for in-processing June 3 to take their place as the next class.

DGMC operates the largest graduate medical education program in the Air Force. The GME program consists of six medical, two dental and four allied health sciences classes with 101 student residents per year. This includes a certified registered nurse anesthetist class in conjunction with the U.S. Army's graduate program in anesthesia nursing at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and Baylor University, Texas that is ranked No. 1 out of 112 programs in the U.S. DGMC's family medicine program with 24 residents is also the largest in the Air Force.

The general surgery and internal medicine residency programs at DGMC treat civilian and military patients in partnership with the University of California at Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Diagnostic radiology, transitional year, advanced education in general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pharmacy practice, physician assistant and social work residency programs round out the suite of GME programs.

Additionally, DGMC offers six Phase II training programs for enlisted medical technicians and a nurse transition program for 310 students annually.

DGMC is the Air Force Medical Service's flagship medical treatment facility in the U.S., providing a full spectrum of care to a prime service area population of more than 130,000 TRICARE eligible patients in the immediate San Francisco and Sacramento vicinity. This also includes more than 377,000 Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System eligible patients from 17 counties covering 40,000 square miles.

The following residents received their diplomas and follow-on assignments during a graduation ceremony held today at the Delta Breeze Club, presided by Col. (Dr.) Kevin Connolly, 60th Medical Group commander and the keynote speaker, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Geoffrey Wiedeman, Jr. Wiedeman last served as mobilization assistant to the Surgeon General, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., and consultant to the Surgeon General on reserve medical affairs and readiness.
