Travis hockey team takes title Published Nov. 14, 2012 By 2nd Lt. Jessica Clark 60th AIr Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Travis Jets hockey team won something other than money in its trip to Las Vegas Nov. 8 through 11. The first-place trophy was awarded to the team after it went undefeated in five games in the 10th annual Armed Services Hockey for Heroes tournament at the Sobe Ice Arena in Vegas. "We played five games in four days against a variety of teams including Nellis Thunder, APG JTF-Blast, Offutt Marauders II, and the Hill Falcons," said Staff Sgt. Daren Lazo, 15th Air Mobility Operations Squadron, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning NCO in charge and president of Travis Jets. "We had people representing the total force from Travis, reservists, active duty and retirees, so it really encompassed everyone working together under one banner." The championship title was well-earned for the Jets this year. According to Lazo, most of the team members play games on Sunday nights in Vacaville, Calif., all year to practice. "There were a few close games," Lazo said. "One particular game was at 3 a.m. and we were losing 4-3 with a minute to go. At 28 seconds, we tied the game and then, with only two seconds left, Staff Sgt. Tony Henderson slapped a shot from the center and won the game. We went on to play this same team in overtime for the championship." Senior Airman Travis Henry, 60th CES Squadron Fuel Maintenance, was voted player of the tournament, scoring more than 10 goals. "I've played hockey ever since I could skate at 3 years old," he said. "This weekend was a blast for me because I haven't played hockey in an organized team since high school. It was nice to have a dedicated team together." "It was pretty exciting," Lazo said. "Of course, everyone was relieved. The Jets have never gone undefeated in the 10 years of this tournament, so this was a special team." According to Lazo, most of the team members play games on Sunday nights in Vacaville, Calif., all year for practice.
