Keep safety in mind with return to school

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --  Summer is over and school is back in session. School means school buses and kids -- a lot of them! The majority of children residing on base attend one of the schools in or around Travis. To help kick off a great school year, the Travis Safety Office is conducting a back to school safety campaign providing safety tips to assist our Travis families in having a successful school year. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

If your commute involves school bus traffic and bus stops, plan ahead. Obey all traffic regulations and remain alert at intersections for children that may be crossing the street. Remember speed limits are often decreased during peak times in the day or during school hours. Always exercise care when passing school bus stops where children are awaiting the bus.

Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop. Choose the most direct route with the fewest street crossing or use intersections with crossing guards. Test the route with your child. Tell him or her to stay away from parks, vacant lots, fields and other places where there aren't many people around. When riding a bicycle, skateboard, scooter or roller blades remember it is a requirement to wear a helmet.

Arm yourself with information on school policy, schedules and transportation information that will assist you throughout the year. Remember education is the key to safety. The safety staff will be handing out pamphlets filled with safety tips at the Exchange parking lot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 and 15. Representatives from the California Highway Patrol will be present on the 15th to conduct car seat safety checks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Have a fun and safe school year.
