Twice a year the Travis First Sergeants Association awards Airmen with scholarships to help offset education cost.

Airman 1st Class Ricardo Aldahondo, 60th Medical Support Squadron medical service accounting specialist, received the first $250 Dan Webster scholarship at the first sergeant meeting Wednesday.

"This scholarship really makes me appreciate all of the benefits the Air Force has to offer," said Airman Aldahondo. "The scholarship motivates me even more towards my education and I'm grateful to receive it."

To receive the scholarship Airman Aldahondo had to submit a package, degree plan, transcripts and an essay describing the importance of leadership.

"Airman Aldahondo epitomizes what we expect of tomorrow's leaders," said Master Sgt. Johnny Mckenzie, 60th MDSS first sergeant. "He approaches everything with a quiet determination and perseverance rarely seen."

Airman Aldahondo works in health services management at David Grant USAF Medical Center and has already completed a bachelor's degree and is currently working on a master's degree in business administration, which he will complete in December 2011.

Airman Aldahondo wants to pursue a commission in the Air Force Medical Corp.

"As the Dan Webster scholarship recipient, it is evident that he understands the importance of higher education and its role in his continued development as a member of the United States Air Force," said Sergeant Mckenzie.

The scholarship is a memorial to Master Sgt. Dan Webster a former first sergeant, who died unexpectedly a few years ago, said Sergeant Mckenzie. The scholarship allows Team Travis and the First Sergeant's Council to keep Sergeant Webster's legacy of helping people alive.
