Responding to concerns regarding speeding and traffic safety, the Security Forces acquired the enhanced capability of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) to enforce compliance with speed limits on base.

"Security Forces is aware of the concerns over speeding on Travis and is responding with our new technology," said Tech. Sgt. Jason Kornelis, 60th Security Forces Squadron Police Services. "LIDAR is more accurate and smaller than radar devices, which allows patrols to effectively enforce the base traffic code."

LIDAR has the distinct advantage over traditional radar speed-measuring devices with the ability to single out a vehicle from a group. LIDAR also measures vehicle speed from a greater distance and at a faster rate than the traditional radar devices. Additionally, the device is portable and does not require a tether or permanent mount to a vehicle.

"Our patrols could walk around different areas of the base and enforce traffic code without the tell-tale sign of a police cruiser," said Sergeant Kornelis. "This is going to put speeders at a great disadvantage, and increase public safety."
