The American Red Cross's Travis station at David Grant USAF Medical Center recently received a mini-grant to offer an expanded menu of training opportunities.

Through Red Cross call center services, frequent interaction with service partners and the Travis station, the agency has a perspective on unmet needs in the military communities of which no - or low - cost health and safety education and training is a high priority.

For the fourth year in a row, the Red Cross Travis station will sponsor a free, base-wide, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training day April 4 at the Base Chapel Annex. This half-day course will provide training in adult CPR. If you need this course, sign up now for one of 100 spots available. Anyone with access to Travis is welcome to attend one of the two sessions being held at 8:30 a.m. or 1 p.m.

The Red Cross Travis station is also offering additional free health and safety education and training courses at the Airman and Family Readiness Center for Travis' military families. Their core services of emergency communications, verification and financial assistance reach 125 military families a month, and their "Get To Know You" program reaches approximately 200-250 each month.

If you are a military family member, you are eligible and encouraged to participate in these training courses, which will be offered monthly starting Feb. 19. These classes are free for military families (one per household) who are in the ranks of E-6 and below. Master sergeant and above ranks will be charged $10 per class.

Scheduled expanded training classes at the Airman and Family Readiness Center:

Feb. 19, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Standard First Aid and Adult CPR

Classes are scheduled as follows at the Base Chapel Annex:

March 19, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Infant Child CPR

April 16, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Standard First Aid

May 14 to 15 California Child Care (1-1/2 days) starting 8:30 a.m. each day; May 14, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and May 15, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

June 18, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Babysitting Class

According to Joan Kelley-Williams, Red Cross station manager at Travis, adding classes for lower-income military households has been a goal for four years. "Since I have been here, that has been the number one request for service," said Ms. Kelley-Williams. "This program will enable us to help better prepare military families with stretching their budgets."
