Maj. (Dr.) Karsten Munck, 60th Surgical Operation Squadron, passed away Oct. 20 from a medical condition developing two weeks after a surgical procedure conducted at an off-base medical facility.

Maj. Munck was born June 4, 1970, in Copenhagen, Denmark. A naturalized citizen, he joined the Air Force July 11, 2001. He was assigned to the 60th MSGS at Travis Air Force Base as a staff otorhinolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon).

He is survived by his wife, Amber and his three sons, Elijah, Gabriel and Moriah.

"Karsten was an outstanding physician, a dedicated patriot and officer and a loving husband and father. His work was nationally recognized, and he published in two major medical journals as well as authored four different textbook chapters," said Lt. Col. T. Michael Dye, 60th MSGS commander. "He established a multidisciplinary thyroid nodule clinic that increased cancer detection by a third in the first year alone. He was a church teen leader volunteer, a youth tennis coach, and a Sunday school teacher. He will be sorely missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him."

"Team Travis lost one of its valued family members," said Col. Mark Dillon, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander. "We share in the sorrow felt by his family, friends and loved ones. He will be greatly missed."

Services for Maj. Munck have been set for 1130 a.m., Oct. 18 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Vacaville, Calif.
