Duck Pond under construction

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --  Portions of the Duck Pond adjacent to Burgan Road near the north gate are closed through mid-November.

The closures, designed to repair and improve the jogging trail around the pond, are expected to happen in two phases.

The first is underway and scheduled to finish Oct. 15, according to Master Sgt. Henry Lapira, 60th Civil Engineer Squadron.

The majority of the area -- the playground and the pond itself -- will be closed during the first phase. During this time, the trail on the north side of the pond will remain open.
During the second phase, the open and closed areas will be swapped. The second section is set to be completed Nov. 18.

Sergeant Lapira said erosion of the jogging trail is the primary reason for the closures.
"There's decomposed granite," he said. "That's the main material we use on the trail.

We're going to try to fix the erosion and fix the decomposed granite on it."

Dan Postak, a worker with Gentry Construction, was looking at the area with co-workers Tuesday afternoon as fencing was being erected around the pond.

Mr. Postak said repairs and improvements to the trail are the aim of the project.

"We're going to widen the path out to 10 feet," Mr. Postak said. "We're also going to try to fix the drainage problems."

Mr. Spencer Lowe, Postak's co-worker, added that part of the goal is to clean everything on and around the trail.

The parking area will remain open through all phases of the project. Workers will be at the site from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, said Sergeant Lapira.

"Be aware where the construction area is," he added. "Use caution when entering the Duck Pond."
