60th OSS Formal Training Unit, Life Support move increases efficiency

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --  It was an operation that required the cooperation of five base organizations, more than seven months of planning, and the razing and renovating of three buildings.
And you thought your Do-It-Yourself move was hard.

The 60th Operations Support Squadron KC-10 Formal Training Unit recently moved operations from Bldg. 556 to Bldg. 1212. In order to use Bldg. 1212, the 60th OSS Life Support had to move from Bldg. 1212 and consolidate its operations to Bldg. 83. The FTU's former headquarters, Bldg. 556, will be razed early this month to make way for a new Aerospace Ground Equipment building.

The impetus behind this shifting of resources was to increase efficiency in line with Air Mobility Command's Velocity Initiative, according to Lt. Col. Bryan Watt, 60th Operations Support Squadron commander.

The idea to consolidate life support into one building came from Master Sgt. Dan Hawkins, Life Support superintendent. Previously, aircrew would need to go to two buildings across the base from each other to get life support equipment.

"It's just not realistic in this day and age to have a crew make several stops to get their equipment," Colonel Watt said. "Moving life support from Bldg. 1212 to 83 represented a significant increase in efficiency. Now, it's a one-stop shop for all C-5 and C-17 life support equipment."
