Museum to host drive

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --  The Travis Heritage Center is scheduled to host a Jimmy Doolittle Air and Space Museum Foundation membership drive June 28 at the center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will have open aircraft to view, on site foundation board members to answer questions, gift shop availability and a hamburger luncheon for purchase.

The drive is aimed to attract volunteers for the center and membership for the foundation.

"The Jimmy Doolittle Air and Space Museum Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that funds, restores and maintains a lot of the aircraft here at the Heritage Center," said Master Sgt. Aaron Wallenburg, Travis Heritage Center curator. "We do have a very close working relationship with the foundation."

The aircraft scheduled to be opened for viewing are the C-7 Caribou, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Fairchild C-123 Provider, Douglas C-124 Globemaster II and Douglas C-133 Cargomaster.

"To assist the Heritage Center as best as possible, the foundation raises funds for all the projects that maintain many of the aircraft here," said retired Chief Master Sgt. Dave Florek, Jimmy Doolittle Air and Space Museum Foundation vice president. "This membership drive is one source of funding and it all goes to a good cause."

Home to 35 static aircraft, the Heritage Center boasts one of the largest collections of military aircraft on the West coast.

"This is an opportunity to give back," Wallenburg said. "The Heritage Center is part of our local community and it is Travis history."
