Construction crews are scheduled to finish a two-phase renovation project March 20 at the Travis Fitness Center. Construction lasted four months and was split into two phases to prevent any breaks in service of the fitness program at the gym.

"The fitness center serves about 412,000 people per year," said Staff Sgt. Monica Seiser, 60th Force Support Squadron fitness supervisor. "We had to strategically move around classes and reservations to properly accommodate everybody during the construction. None of the services here were required to be cancelled."

During construction, the floors in both gym areas were stripped and refinished. The lines were repainted and a clear coat was applied and buffed. The racquetball courts and aerobic room received new floors and a fresh coat of paint as well.

In addition to the floors and paint, the locker rooms were steam cleaned and old wooden benches were replaced with new composite plastic ones. The free weight area also received new flooring.

"It's all about meeting the customers' needs," said Dean Fazzio, 60th FSS fitness and sports manager. "The previous state of conditions in the facility were good, but a little older and there were some minor safety concerns. They're even better now and the customers couldn't be happier."

The $332,000 project went into planning in 2009 and was funded in 2011. Once construction began, it only took four months to complete.

"Our main goal was to get the doors on these facilities open as soon as possible so people could get in there and enjoy them," Fazzio said. "To meet the wing commander's fitness program requirements, these areas need to be up and running as much as possible."

The new improvements are just in time to facilitate a few upcoming special events as well, Seiser said.

"We have a dodge ball tournament on March 28 and are really looking forward to using the newly renovated gym," she said.
