This Sunday, our nation will take time to honor you - our military veterans and the dedicated families that support them.

Our nation holds your true sacrifices to such a high degree that we officially stand down our government operations for an entire day and celebrate you and those who have gone before with parades and other events.

Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans. It is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, and is the anniversary of the signing of the 1918 Armistice that ended World War I.

Veterans Day is largely intended to thank veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to United States national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and served with distinction.

In his proclamation designating Veterans Day as a national holiday, former President Dwight Eisenhower said, "On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

This is our 54th Veterans Day. Locally, we are blessed with a loving community that shares in our deep respect for this day and are dedicated to honoring those who serve.

There are several activities planned in Vacaville, Fairfield and our surrounding Solano County. Our communities want you there to honor you for your service and as a way to say thanks for all you do!

On behalf of Col. Steve and Mrs. Deb Arquiette and Chief Master Sgt. Michael and Mrs. Charlene Williams, have a great, but safe three-day weekend. Please take care of each other and get us all back safe and sound on Tuesday!
