Airmen remain in the fight

One may assume from watching the nightly news that the Air Force's role in the current War on Terrorism is over. Meanwhile, Airmen are participating in convoys alongside the Army and Marines, deploying for months, if not a year at a time, and constantly transporting supplies and personnel in and out of the area of responsibility. Every facet of our Air Force, most notably our Air Mobility team, is busy. Team Travis' airlift, air refueling, expeditionary combat support and medical teams are heavily engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are far from "out of the fight."

Next week we have the distinct honor of partnering with Beale Air Force Base, Calif. to support Air Force Week Sacramento. During this week, and as we continually deploy Airmen for Air Expeditionary Force Cycle 7/8, Airmen from both bases, the Reserves, Air National Guard and local recruiting squadrons will be spreading the word that the Air Force is indeed "In the Fight."

The surrounding community is supporting us in our endeavor to educate the local population. The California State government, Solano County, Yolo County and several surrounding communities have written proclamations declaring June 4 through 10 as Air Force Week. During that time, we will conduct flyovers, host three Tops in Blue performances and visit schools to increase awareness, understanding and support for the Air Force.

The efforts will inform the public of our priorities and capabilities, highlight the importance of the Air Force to national defense, and share the accomplishments, performance and sacrifices of our Airmen. I encourage everyone to take the time to review the schedule in this week's Tailwind and attend the many events offered during the week.

Your participation in this event is easy -- continue to represent yourself well in the local community and spread the word about your experiences in the Air Force. This week is not meant to be a recruiting event, but more an awareness event. Be proud of your accomplishments and sacrifices you have made while being an Airman in today's Air Force. We know it is not easy working the hours you do or constantly having to leave your family. You are a priceless asset in the Global War on Terrorism -- your contributions are necessary for our success. This week should be fun. I hope you, your family and your friends can participate.

Wrapping up AF Week will be performances by the USAF F-16 aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds, at the Capitol City Air show, June 9 and 10. The air show will take place at the old Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento. Come out and have some fun sharing your Air Force story.
