Three-slide spotlight boosts morale Published April 28, 2016 By Maj. Traci Bowman 60th Logistics Readiness Squadron TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Nine months into my first command, I still come to work every day excited by what my squadron does and the people who do it. Having the honor to command a squadron of more than 300 people has its challenges, but I get back so much more than I put in. I have an amazing support team that sets me up for success. I may be biased, but I believe they are the best in the world. I was given lots of advice over the past 22 years preparing me for this job, but my favorite piece was something I would like to share. It's called "Three Slide Spotlight" and it has a couple of rules. First, you have to volunteer to participate. Second, you have three slides to tell the staff at our weekly meeting a little about yourself. Finally, you get to stay or leave after you present. It's simple. You can be as creative as you want and share whatever you want. Now, as much as I love a good staff meeting, my favorite part is learning about my squadron's families, goals, hobbies, accomplishments and their stories. We have met amazing artists, musicians, baseball fanatics, single dads raising adorable daughters, Air Force level volleyball players, future paramedics and police officers, a prospective coffee lounge owner, a possible pro-sports team manager, an ultra-marathoner, fitness fanatics, parents with children serving, brothers serving together, Airmen with parents serving, a serious shoe collector, a newlywed, a civilian married to a professional bodybuilder, several old car collectors, Airmen born in Hawaii, the Philippines, gamers, marathoners, former professional mountain biker, and a Civil Air patrolman. The stories are amazing and I always share who we met with the rest of the squadron before I leave for the night. I know I will make mistakes while in command, but when I look back, I know this will always be something I am glad I did.
