Veterans Day: Just say thank you for their service Published Nov. 8, 2013 By Chief Master Sgt. Nancy Hinojosa 749th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf," George Orwell As we draw close to Veterans Day, after 12 years of war that has wearied us all, let us remember all veterans, past and present. They may have been "rough men," but all were gallant men and women of courage who answered the call and gave much. Veterans Day was established to honor Americans who had served in World War I and is celebrated annually Nov. 11, the anniversary of the day the armistice was signed in 1918. Today, Veterans Day is devoted to veterans of all wars for their patriotism and willingness to serve in the military and to honor their sacrifices made for our country. There are more than 21.8 million veterans in the United States. Approximately 20.2 million are men and only 1.6 million are women. California has about 2 million veterans living in its state. Nov. 11 is the day we ensure veterans understand unequivocally that Americans deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made previously and the ones they still face to keep our country free. Who are these amazing veterans? They are the brave men and women who serve and protect the United States. They originate from all walks of life. They are our parents, sons, daughters and grandparents. They are co-workers, as well as friends and neighbors who are an important part of every community. Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who have served this country, both living and dead. In fact, this special day is largely intended to pay homage to all the living veterans. We use this day to thank all those who have served honorably in the military, during times of war or peace. Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to eulogize military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. That is not true. Memorial Day is the day we set aside to pay tribute to America's war dead. Veterans Day is truly an amazing holiday. Please take the time to thank those around you for the sacrifices they have endured. No gesture is too small, no kind word will go unnoticed. If you are a veteran, whatever you choose to do on this day to celebrate the day, let it be something you have a passion for. Whether it is fishing, working out, participating in a parade or spending time with your family, know that you have worked hard for the freedom to be able to do such activities. I would like to thank all my fellow veterans for the selfless contributions they have made and I hope you all have an amazing Veterans Day.
