Command Chief holds first enlisted call Published Jan. 18, 2017 By Staff Sgt. Nicole Leidholm 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs Chief Master Sgt. Steve Nichols, 60th Air Mobility Wing command chief, held his first enlisted calls Jan. 10, 11 and 13 at the base theater at Travis Air Force Base, California. Nichols talked about the wing’s mission and vision to rapidly project American power anytime…anywhere as America’s finest mobility force. He also gave the wing a clear picture of his leadership priorities. The chief stressed the importance of deliberately developing strong, resilient Airmen and the need to take care of those Airmen. “We need to take care of our Airmen,” said Nichols. “We need to recognize our Airmen with awards and decorations. Are we giving clear expectations and standards and challenging our Airmen to write a better performance report? I want Travis to be known as a place that makes chiefs.” It’s also important for Airmen and supervisors to build relationships and take pride in their jobs and ultimately, mission success, Nichols said. “This is what leaders should be prioritizing,” said Nichols. “How do you build enduring relationships? You need to know your Airmen, set high standards and challenge Airmen.” While challenging Airmen with high standards, the chief also said its vital Airmen are free to share their ideas…doing so promotes innovation. “Our Airmen are always looking for a better way,” said Nichols. “We need to put our focus behind that. Make your jobs easier, better, cheaper, less manpower intensive. Cultivate an environment where your Airmen want to bring their ideas to you.” The chief also discussed the importance of retention, fostering a professional work environment and encouraged hundreds of Airmen at each session to get involved in the community. Nichols ended the enlisted call with a question and answer session before shouting, “No bounds,” which is the 60th AMW’s motto. Nichols has served 22-years in the Air Force and began his career as a security forces member, according to his biography. He became the 60th AMW command chief in July 2016.
