Travis Air Force Base will experience a base-wide power outage 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Pacific Gas and Electric will conduct maintenance and repairs on the 60 KVA line that is part of the base's power source located near the north gate entrance directly supporting the base.

For PG&E to safely and efficiently make the needed repairs, the power feed must be disconnected. If this repair is not completed, there is potential for a much larger, unplanned power outage.

During the outage, the Balfour Beatty Community Center along with the Travis Commissary and its vendors, are sponsoring a family fun day. The BBCC will provide a free breakfast starting at 7 a.m., a free lunch, bounce houses, games and a splash park while the power's out. The Commissary is open during regular business hours.

The entire base, with the exception of David Grant USAF Medical Center and mission critical facilities, are affected.

Here are some power outage tips to help you get through the day:

 Limit opening refrigerators and freezers. Tie a string around the handle as a reminder.

 Freeze plastic containers filled with water to make blocks of ice that can be placed in your refrigerator and freezer during the outage to prevent foods from spoiling or put perishables items in a cooler ahead of time.

 Do not attempt to wire a generator into your household wiring.

 Many housing units have electric water heaters and will not produce hot water during the outage.

 Smoke detectors may need new 9-volt batteries. Detectors wired into homes will false beep all day during the outage.

 Have battery backups in electronic devices.

 Garage doors will need to be operated manually, so consider parking vehicles outside of the garage. Open it for the day or use an emergency cord to manually lift the door.

 Turn off heating and cooling systems prior to or during the outage, as well as computers and televisions, to prevent a surge when the power is restored.

 Have batteries and flashlights readily available for use, not candles.

 Fully charge cellphones the night prior. Remember, cordless home phones will lose their power. Charge cellphones in vehicles, if necessary. Plan for alternate communication methods if telephone systems require electricity.

 When in doubt, visit the community center. The community manager is here to assist.
