Members of the 60th Operations Group gathered Sept. 13 to celebrate the grand opening of their dorm residents' new day room.

Event participants ranged from Col. Dwight Sones, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. John Evalle, 60th AMW command chief, to supervisors and the Airmen who live in the dorms.

"The purpose of this event is to recognize our outstanding Airmen who have won money in the dorm-of-the-quarter awards," said 2nd Lt. Jennifer Gamble, 60th Operations Support Squadron airfield operations officer. "They put their winnings into redesigning a new day room. We are here to celebrate their accomplishment and to show them our support."

The event began with supervisors and group leadership loading three tables with a variety of foods and desserts. The chapel's The Peak was on scene, handing out free Italian soda, while Airman 1st Class Cameron Piontek, 60th OSS air traffic controller, was the disc jockey with two electronic turntables, a mixing board and a pair of speakers pumping out a variety of music.

After Sones' arrival, the official portion of the ceremony began. Members of the OG dorm council, led by Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Asproth, the council's vice president and 6th Air Refueling Squadron member, gave the commander a tour of their new day room. The new room features a flat-screen TV, air hockey table and foosball table. In addition, the room has a fresh look with a new paint job, new artwork and a couch and love seat. After the tour, Sones and Asproth proceeded with the official ribbon cutting, opening the new room to the dorm residents.

"It was one of the proudest moments in my military career," Asproth said. "It was great to see everyone come out and recognize what we worked so hard for and accomplished."

Each quarter, a panel judges the dormitories based each dorm's residents' external areas of responsibility, day rooms, randomly selected room inspections and energy consumption, said Master Sgt. Benjamin Graver, 60th Civil Engineer Squadron dormitory superintendent.

"We recently added energy consumption as a factor in the judging as a way to motivate Airmen to conserve energy," Graver said.

The new day room is an example of how taking pride in everything you do, including maintaining a dorm, can pay off, Gamble said.

"It was amazing to watch the team of Airmen and supervisors come together with an overwhelming flood of support for the Ops Group dorm dinner," said Col. J.C. Millard, 60th Operations Group commander. "With the OG 'Hack'n the Mission' around the world every day, it is important to remember we are a family and we take care of our own."
