The Officers' Spouses' and Enlisted Spouses' Club jointly held their Annual Scholarship Evening and Awards Ceremony May 11 at the Delta Breeze Club. The purpose of the event was to award Travis military spouses and their families a scholarship to pursue higher education. In total, the two clubs gave out $34,000 to the evening's 21 recipients.

The recipients were divided into three categories: high school students seeking an undergraduate degree, spouses seeking undergraduate degrees and spouses seeking graduate degrees. The theme of the event was the "Bucket List," which is about setting goals and doing what it takes to achieve them in all aspects of life.

To receive the scholarships, the recipients each submitted an essay about their own bucket lists said Brad Eychner, TOSC president. The essays were given to the Travis Education Center to be graded by education professionals. Some of the criteria the judges used to grade the essays were the applicants' educational achievements, extra-circular activities and community involvement.

"We are trying to capture the whole person concept," Eychner said. "Between their school work, employment and community services -- the essays are a way to capture those things."
Once the essays were graded, they were ranked and returned to the clubs with only the scores and not the candidate's names to protect the integrity of the process, he said. The amount of money the clubs award is based on the score. Although the recipients were notified that they would be receiving a scholarship, they did not learn the amount until their names were announced at the ceremony.

For high school senior Destinee McGuire, receiving the scholarship will help cross off a big item from her bucket list. She plans to use the award to attend college for environmental sciences.

"It costs a lot of money and everything counts," McGuire said. "So everything that I get is going to help me not be in debt."

For people like McGuire who would like to apply for the TESC/TOSC scholarships next year, the clubs stress the need to get any transcripts and letters of recommendations in order. Next year it could be you.
