Travis prepares for Critical Days of Summer Published May 11, 2012 By Gary Ash 60th Air Mobility Wing Safety TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Critical Days of Summer campaign begins May 25 for the Memorial Day weekend and ends after Labor Day weekend. Travis leadership's goal is to heighten activity awareness so each Airman will make their safety a personal choice. The theme this year is "Safety - It's Personal." On May 18, members of team Travis will have an opportunity to see the high impact presentation called Street Smart. Presented by two dynamic speakers, who are professional paramedics and firemen, they will take the audience to a realistic level of what they see on the streets. The presentation is designed to get Airmen into the mindset of making wise decisions when faced with choices after consuming alcohol. They also stress the results of what happens when an individual doesn't elect to wear occupant restraints and are involved in a car crash. The wing safety office will also be hosting a Safety Day fair for all personnel to participate in and interact with numerous on- and off-base organizations that have safety in mind. This event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. Food will be available for purchase. The reason the Air Force and Travis leadership focus on the critical days of summer is because it has proven to be one of the most dangerous periods of the year. When the days are warm and summer activities increase, we spend more time taking advantage of having outdoor fun. This year, the men and women of Travis will be directed to attend one of the two presentations at the base theater at 9 a.m. and again at noon. Following the presentation, personnel will be treated to the safety fair with displays from off-base partners like the California Highway Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, National Park Service and more. Airmen are encouraged to participate in the Safety Day fair by visiting the various displays and meeting with the information experts. Visitors can choose the subject of interest. Numerous motorcycle experts will be on hand to recommend the proper personal protective equipment for a safe ride, or meet with the CHP officer who oversees the state program. See displays that show the results of poor decisions and interact with someone who can give solid advice in your personal safety. Fire Department, local law enforcement and EOD will be in attendance to help the curious understand what they do and how you live without need of their emergency care. The 60th Force Support Squadron is pitching in by bringing the Safety Day fair a look at what they can do for anyone interested in hiking, whitewater rafting, camping and a whole lot more. The FSS Outdoor Recreation personnel will be on hand to discuss available trips and lessons to help make each experience a safe one. Other experts such as the National Parks Service and the U.S. Forest Service will be available to add valuable insight to parks and activities within driving distance of Travis. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be on hand to help boaters and water loving individuals to understand the current rules and regulations for safe activities on our lakes and tributaries. Remember, wing leadership is counting on your participation. Taking care of yourself, your family and each other helps reduce the risk in your daily work and off-duty activities. By taking care of one another and being supportive Wingmen we make this big campaign personal. By making safety personal, everyone benefits; the attention you pay to safety this summer will make a huge difference in your personal enjoyment of the season.
