Fairways grand opening

Fairways, the newest restaurant to participate in the Food Transformation Initiative at Travis, held its grand opening Sept. 1 at Cypress Lakes Golf Course.

The event marked the beginning of the availability of campus-style dining at the 60th Force Support Squadron food options around the base.

Airmen with meal cards can now dine for free at the Delta Breeze Club, Travis Bowl, Cypress Lakes Golf Course, the Westwind Inn and the Knucklebuster Café in Hangar 810.

"If you are an Airman who wants to play 18 holes of golf, you are going to be here through lunchtime," said Master Sgt. Lowell Olson, Airmen and Family Readiness Center NCO in charge. "Now you can come out and play golf and get food with your meal card. It eliminates the need to go back to the dining facility to eat."

Fairways grand opening drew a variety of Airmen, including the wing commander and command chief, to enjoy a sampling of the new menu. They could also play games to try to win T-shirts, towels and free rounds of golf.

"The best thing about Fairways is the new menu," said Mustak Keval, Airman and Family Readiness Center chief. "It's not too heavy, so you can have something to eat, but still feel good going out to play golf afterwards. The variety of food available is much better too."

People seemed to enjoy the food, as many went back up to the sampling table for second and third helpings.

"The breakfast burritos and cupcakes were the best," said Tech. Sgt. Arvin Baldorado, 60th Operations Support Squadron, aircrew flight equipment flightline operations NCO in charge. "They have good prices too. I was expecting to spend like $8 for a sandwich, but it was cheap."

The next grand opening event for the FTI is the unveiling of Ten Pin at Travis Bowl, the bowling alleys eatery, scheduled Sept. 15.
