Change of Command welcomes Colonel Sones Published Aug. 5, 2011 By 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Col. Dwight Sones replaced Col. James Vechery as the 60th Air Mobility Wing commander at a Change of Command ceremony today at Travis Air Force Base. Vechery moves on to Scott Air Force Base to become the Deputy Director of Operations at Air Mobility Command. The past year prior to joining Team Travis, Sones was the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing commander at Manas, Kyrgyz Republic. Sones is responsible for the combined efforts of all operations and support activities associated with the worldwide air mobility mission. The Team Travis, C-5 Galaxy, KC-10 Extender and C-17 Globemaster III, aircraft participate in air, land and aerial refueling taskings, responding to Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed combat operations and supporting U.S. State Department-sponsored humanitarian relief efforts worldwide. Sones is also responsible for ensuring the readiness and well being of more than 22,800 active duty, Reserve and civilian personnel and their families. Sones' background includes experience in strategic airlift, tactical airlift and aerial refueling missions. He has served on numerous operational assignments and staff positions at the Joint and Major Command level.
