Weekend safety reminder

As we begin to wind down the summer season, I wanted to take a moment and thank all of you for the hard work and great accomplishments Team Travis has achieved.

School began this week for those who attend the base schools and this is a perfect time to remind everyone to remain vigilant for excited children on our sidewalks and streets.

I would be remiss if I did not also mention that, historically, August is the most dangerous month of the summer; a trend which has held true this year. Within the past few days the Air Force has lost four Airmen and one Citadel graduate in off-duty mishaps. Two of these deaths were related to motorcycles, while the other three were privately owned vehicle mishaps.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, more Americans die on the nation's highways during the days between the Saturday before Memorial Day and Labor Day than at any other time of the year. The majority of fatal crashes occurred on two-lane, non-divided roadways and Labor Day ranks tops as the holiday with the most alcohol-related vehicle crashes.

Each and every one of you is a vital contributor to Team Travis...Air Power, and I cannot afford to lose any member of my Team Travis Family. I encourage you to actively employ Risk Management techniques to your on AND off-duty activities and continue your efforts at being great Wingmen for your fellow airmen.

Gen. Raymond Johns, commander Air Mobility Command, has taken up the cause for Airmen safety on his blog, which you can follow at http://amc.dodlive.mil/ .

Once again, I thank you for your outstanding efforts at making this one of the most successful Critical Days of Summer campaigns in Travis' history, and I remind you that our task is not over!

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend Team Travis...Airpower!
