What's been happening with the Travis Special Needs Task Force? If you went by the Base Exchange or Commissary last week, you may have seen volunteers from the community raising funds for Travis special needs events.

The SNTF hosts and coordinates events such as a summer carnival and a holiday dinner to better the lives of special needs families on Travis. All funds raised go toward events such as these.

Our latest undertaking is a Special Needs Mini Conference Feb. 20 at the Airman and Family Readiness Center from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is a first for the task force with the theme of the mini conference being "Roadmap to Special Needs." Experts are coming from the medical, education and local special needs communities to speak with families, in addition to resource tables. Register at www.travisafrc.com.

This task force is a work in progress and is comprised of special needs parents, helping agency representatives and those with a heart for special needs.

"The intent of the Special Needs Task Force is to first find a need and through our individual strengths support each other's weaknesses," said Master Sgt. Clifton Shockley, vice president of the Special Needs Task Force and a special needs parent. "This is achieved through networking, education, suggestions, finding solutions and forging relations with community resources."

The task force hopes to expand its efforts by providing additional events, educational opportunities and networking for community building.

Members of the task force are excited to be involved in a grassroots effort to make Travis "our home town." They know there is tremendous support out there from the community simply from the volunteers who step forward and the donations received. With your help, events hosted in support of special needs families can occur monthly. Visit the Web site for upcoming happenings and to see how you can get involved.
