Airmen's Attic: Undiscovered treasures

For servicemembers and veterans in need of household goods, Team Travis has a free solution: the Airmen's Attic.

Recently, the Airmen's Attic changed its policy that limited its use to only Airmen. The facility is now open to all active-duty members and veterans. Also, the policy requiring a letter from a first sergeant is no longer in effect.

"The change has been a positive one. Normally, we had six customers a day; now about 20," said Joleen McBee, manager of the Airmen's Attic.

For Travis servicemembers, Airmen's Attic is a place where uniformed personnel can obtain televisions, DVD players, furniture and home goods to turn their homes from drab to fab.

The organization is always in need of support from local volunteers to maintain the operation. For servicemembers who will soon permanently change station or just need to remove some clutter, the Airmen's Attic is always in need of donations.

"We always need volunteers," said Mrs. McBee. "For mothers with children, we have a play area so they can just bring their child to work with them."

Donations to the Airmen's Attic may be dropped off during the week during business hours. Anything is accepted from adult and children clothing, furniture, appliances, mattresses and toys.

"We work on a need basis, not a want," said Mrs. McBee. "If a customer needs something like a dresser because their clothing is on the floor, we will look for one."
