Voluntary Protection Program Halloween safety Published Oct. 13, 2009 By Robert Ruminski 60th Air Mobility Wing VPP manager TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- As Halloween approaches, many of us who share in the festivities prepare for an exciting evening of trick-or-treating. We get our children more excited than they already are and spend countless hours creating the best costume on the planet. As the evening approaches in your neighborhood, we ask that as parents, you place safety first and foremost. Children are more distracted than normal and may not be aware of a developing hazard. I have had several responses from Team Travis members who will be handing out small safety trinkets such as glow-in-the-dark bracelets, which may be a great way to increase child visibility. This highlights the core Voluntary Protection Program concept of "taking care of wingmen 24/7 both on and off duty." As our day of festivities approaches, please take that extra moment to emphasize safety and good judgment with your children and fellow neighborhood candy seekers. Flashlights, safety belts or vests are a great way to enhance visibility of both children and adults. For more information, see your safety representative or myself, or visit the U.S. Product Safety Commission online or HalloweenSafety.com. Take that extra moment ... Stay safe.
