Travis Fire Department Announces Fire Prevention Week activities Published Oct. 2, 2008 Fire Prevention Flight TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In an effort to educate Travis families on how to prevent home fires, the Travis Fire Department is taking a lead role in National Fire Prevention Association Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6 through 11. By hosting local activities and events that will both entertain and educate the public, the Travis Fire Department hopes to raise awareness of key fire safety issues, helping attendees prevent fires and fire injuries and teaching Travis members how to escape in the event of a fire. "Many people don't realize that they are at greater danger from fire at home than anywhere else," says Tech. Sgt. Todd Thompson, 60th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Prevention Flight. "Fortunately, there are many things every individual can do to turn that around and make their homes a safer place. Fire Prevention Week is the time when we reach out to the community one-on-one, teaching people of every age how to prevent fires. This year, we'll be focusing in particular on the theme, Prevent Home Fires. The Travis Fire Department has lined up the following Fire Prevention Week activities for residents: Oct. 7 9 to 1:30 p.m. - Base Exchange display 11:30 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. - Eat lunch and show truck to children (Center Elementary School) 2 to 2:45 p.m. - Scandia Elementary School visit (poster winners announcement) Oct. 8 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Base Exchange display 9 to 10 a.m. - CDC I Sparky / Fire Dept. visit 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. - Eat lunch and show truck to children (Scandia School) Oct. 9 9 a.m. to noon - Base Exchange display 9 to 10 a.m. - CDC III Sparky / Fire Dept. visit 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. - Eat lunch and show truck to children (Travis School) 2:05 to 2:45 p.m. - Center school visit (poster winners announcement) Oct. 10 9 to 10 a.m. - CDC II Sparky / Fire Dept. visit 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. - Travis school visit (poster winners announcement) Oct. 11 (open house) 10:30-11 a.m. - Parade 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Open house (vehicle extrication demonstration, high-angle rescue demonstration and safety house) Don't forget, there is a parade on Oct. 11. The fire department will not be going through the housing area as in years past. The parade will make a one time pass down Travis Avenue starting at Ragsdale Street and ending at First Street. Families may line up along Travis Avenue to enjoy the parade and then head over to Fire Station 2 (Bldg. 175) for the open house festivities.
