So often, we as American citizens, take for granted the privilege of American citizenship. During these challenging times, we are frequently reminded that it is our citizens that make this nation great. From the Sept. 11 terrorist attack response to the current Global War on Terrorism mission, the citizens of our country continue to impress and persevere, to sacrifice and prevail.
As warrior Airmen, we must remember as we defend our country, we must protect its core; our citizens. Airman 1st Class Joan Zuniga, a Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight technician, knows firsthand what it means to be a citizen.

After a year of service to his country, Airman Zuniga became one of the nation's newest citizens July 2. Born in Havana, Cuba, he moved to the United States in 2005. After joining the Air Force in 2007, he was assigned to the 60th Medical Group as a BEE Technician. It has been a lifelong dream of his to become a citizen and serve his country.

"I am very proud to serve my new country," said Airman Zuniga, "and I look forward to continuing my career by earning a commission." Team Travis is fortunate to have members like Airmen Zuniga who consistently display patriotism and devotion for this country.

This notable accomplishment by Airman Zuniga and others like him, reminds us all that we cannot take for granted our citizenship to this great nation. As we re-focus on the basics, take the time to read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution that we have all sworn to support and defend against all enemies foreign and domestic. Continue to take pride in your service to our nation during this time of war. Take pride in the fact that you not only defend your country, but are a citizen of it as well. When you come across Airman Zuniga, take the time to congratulate him on becoming the newest American.
