Devices emitting radio frequency must be approved by the 60th Communications Squadron before use on Travis.

Such equipment includes Family Radio Service, Land Mobile Radio System, radar guns, wireless headsets and wireless local area network LAN devices.

The lattermost is especially prevalent, said Staff Sgt. Michael Orr with the 60th CS.

"They've been popping up left and right on base," he said. "If a squadron purchases a new radio or something emitting RF, they have to coordinate through us because we have to coordinate frequency authorization."

Base residents using wireless LANs also need to inform the CS of their use.

"You're supposed to contact us just to inform us that you have one in your house," Sergeant Orr said.

He said wireless LAN and other devices emitting radio frequency must be cleared through the 60th CS because frequency authorization is required.

"We just need to know about it in case there's interference," he said.

Noncompliance can result in a cease and desist order from the base commander, Sergeant Orr said.
