Commander's Action Line: Crosswalk safety Published Jan. 8, 2008 By 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Question: While driving on Ragsdale Road near the Child Development Center, I recently came close to hitting a woman and her small child. At 7 a.m., it is still dark and hard to see the crosswalk as the paint is faded and it is missing reflectors. Is it possible to replace these on the crosswalk? Answer: Thank you for pointing out your concerns. I assure you that safety is a top priority for me, my commanders and everyone that lives and works on Travis. Ground safety inspectors observed the crosswalk's lack of visibility due to fading paint and missing reflectors, (although there are reflective signs and flashing caution lights on both sides of the road to designate this crosswalk.) In an effort to minimize pedestrian exposure to vehicle traffic, there will be 30 minute parking spots for the CDC installed behind the Base Exchange, eliminating the need for parents to park across the street. Once these spots are in place, the crosswalk will be removed. As a safety note, however, I want to remind all drivers to yield to pedestrians, especially in crosswalks, and follow traffic laws (i.e. not talking on a cell phone.) Additionally, the 60th Security Forces Squadron will continue to monitor these areas to ensure traffic laws are adhered to - this will be done at unannounced times.
