The Travis Fitness Center has scheduled the tenth annual triathlon to take place July 28 at 8:30 a.m., at the Travis Aquatic Center.

"The triathlon is a 10 lap swim, 12 mile bike ride and 3.6 mile run," said Barbara Hickenbottom, 60th Services Squadron fitness specialist. "It's an important event for our Travis personnel because it's a cross-training competition that brings out the base's most elite athletes and inspires training in others. It is often used as a training method for those planning to compete in world-level competitions. I think participants enjoy our event because they appreciate the fewer numbers and a chance to test their abilities."

Individuals and teams are encouraged to pre-register at the fitness center before Monday. The event is open to any Department of Defense cardholder, age 18 or older.

Cost for participation is $15 per person or $40 per team if registered before July 23. For persons wishing to register on the day of the event, the cost will be $20 per person and $45 per team. Fees are payable by cash, check or credit card.

Individual categories are divided by age and gender, and broken into five age ranges 18 to 25, 26 to 32, 33 to 39, 40 to 55, and 56 and older. Individuals must compete in all three events. Teams consist of three members of mixed of any gender or age combination and each member chooses which event they will participate in.

"Although prizes will be awarded in each category, the prize isn't as important as doing your personal best," said Ms. Hickenbottom. "It's an excellent opportunity to showcase the world-class athletes serving in our world-class military."

Volunteers are still needed to work the event. Interested persons can sign-up by calling Ms. Hickenbottom at 424-0989.
