Staff Sgt. Lathan Peterson, 570th Global Mobility Squadron aircraft maintenance technician, passed away July 6 as a result of injuries received in a motocross accident in Dixon, Calif.

Sergeant Peterson was born Oct. 22, 1982 in Breezy Point, Minn., and joined the Air Force in September 2001. During his career at Travis, he served in the 60th Air Mobility Wing and was an original member of the 615th Contingency Response Wing, making him the quintessential Team Travis member. His exceptional performance merited many accolades including two Air Force Achievement medals awarded by the Central Command commanders in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

An accomplished motocross rider, he had been riding since he was 10-years oldĀ and won state championships in Minnesota. According to his co-workers and supervisors, Lathan took pride and ownership in everything he did and could always be found with a smile on his face.

His dedication to the Air Force and commitment to the Global War on Terror was demonstrated in his recent application and acceptance to train as a helicopter gunner.

Even in death his selflessness was reflected when he chose to be an organ donor and give seven people a second chance at life.

"Sergeant Lathan Peterson was an outstanding patriot who served his country with distinction," said Col. Anthony Hinen, 615th CRW commander. "He will be missed; our hearts and prayers go out to his family."

A memorial service is scheduled for July 11 at 9 a.m., at Chapel Center.
