The Travis Youth Center will offer an archery summer camp July 16 through 27.

The class is generally opened to Travis youth, ages eight to 18. However, interested Air Force personnel over 18 are also accepted.

"When intermediate archers attend, the class is split into beginner and intermediate groups, so appropriate instruction can be offered for both groups," said Tem Mills, archery camp instructor.

During the course, which is offered as a summer camp and a monthly class, students can expect to learn the basic steps of good archery form, range safety practices, how to score, the parts and nomenclature of the equipment and range etiquette, said Mr. Mills.
Classes are held on base, in an area designated by the Youth Center.

"Intermediate archers learn techniques to improve their form, and also participate in a Junior Archery Achievement Program that rewards their progress with national recognition," he said.

All equipment, both shooting and safety gear, is provided by the class.
The summer camp lasts for two weeks, with three sessions per week, while the monthly class is held once per week, with four sessions per month, Mr. Mills said.

The Travis Youth Center has offered classes on base through Archery Solano since 2005 when they also held a free summer camp that year.

Individuals interested in signing up for the class should contact the Youth Center at 424-5392. The next monthly class is scheduled to begin Aug. 2.

"This is a sport that is enjoyed for a lifetime," Mr. Mills said. "We have active archers ages eight to 86 in this area. Unlike many sports today, you do not have to start at an early age and be experienced enough to participate as a recreational or competitive archer. We strive to teach each individual that what they accomplish is directly related to their own effort and that they are ultimately responsible for the outcome."
