Education Center increases services, offers FAA certification Published April 19, 2007 By Lt. Col. Thomas Fredericks 60th Mission Support Squadron commander TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Travis Education Center administered its first Federal Aviation Administration Certification Exam March 28. FAA testing is one of the many new and improved services provided by the center. The Travis Education Center became the 12th Air Force base to become certified to administer the FAA General, Airframe and Power Plant electronic exams. The FAA has authorized qualified military installations with Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Support test centers to administer the FAA Airman Knowledge Mechanic tests to eligible active-duty and Reserve component personnel. To be eligible to take the FAA exam, the member must complete all required training and provide the Education Center a certified FAA Form 8610-2 scheduling the exam. Test results and a certified Airman Knowledge Test Report will be provided [to the Airman] immediately after the test. "The Travis Education and Training flight was able to obtain the FAA qualification to offer the Airframe and Power Plant certification exams to our military members," said Jose Dorta, chief of the Education and Training Flight. "By having this ability we are making the certification process for those Travis team members pursuing this certification a lot more convenient and saving them a lot of money they would otherwise be required to pay for these exams," said Mr. Dorta. The ability to provide FAA testing will enable Team Travis members to become FAA Certified Mechanics and enhance their military career and future civilian career marketability. Because this is a DANTES-sponsored program, the test fees, which can range from $90 to $170, are provided free of charge. This benefit will to save the Travis community thousands of dollars collectively.
