Recycling Contest Celebrates Earth Day 2007 Published March 23, 2007 By Mrs. Dolores Tiburcio 60th Civil Engineer Squadron recycling program manager TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- To promote active recycling, the 60th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental flight is turning recyclable trash into a valuable commodity. The environmental flight office will conduct its 10th annual recycling contest in honor Travis' Earth Day '07 program. The time frame for the contest has been changed to March 28 through April 26. The goal of the contest is to reduce solid waste and add money to booster clubs, households and schools. Also, the contest promotes awareness and a positive attitude toward recycling. Squadrons may enter an unlimited number of teams, each with a maximum of 10 people, counting the captain. Military family housing and dorm residents, and local Travis schools are also eligible to enter teams. Teams will collect and redeem California Redemption Value aluminum cans; CRV glass bottles; CRV plastic bottles, with No.1 or No. 2 markings, and scrap glass, to include: brown, green and clear bottles and jars. The current market is paying $1.55 per pound for aluminum cans, 89 cents per pound for polyethylene terephthalate plastic, with number one marking, and 51 cents per pound for high-density polyethylene plastic, with number two marking. Items may be redeemed at the Solano Recycles Buy-Back Center. Items that are redeemed will be weighed and recorded on an official tally sheet. Team captains are responsible for submitting their tally sheets to the environmental flight office so the totals can be tracked through April 19 when the contest ends. The Contest Registration Form can be completed and faxed to 424-5105, attention Ms. Sherry Cassidy, returned to the e-mail address on the form or hand-carried to the environmental flight office in building 570. The registration form will also be distributed via e-mail to each Squadron's Recycling Monitor. Deadline to register is March 28 at 4:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place teams who recycle the most materials, by weight, and to those who turn in the highest dollar amount. The same criteria will be used for the highest individual awards.
