On March 24, the deserted back lots of Travis will be transformed into a battlefield where combatants bleed paint when injured.

The scenario paintball event, dubbed "Operation: Eminent Fallout," and sponsored by Outdoor Recreation will rage for 10 to 12 hours at the Travis paintball field.

"It's a chance for people to get out of the dorms," said Mrs. Bobby Kreulen, Outdoor Recreation paintball program manager. "It's a morale booster. Plus, we have the coolest field in the Air Force."

Unlike open play paintball, scenario paintball immerses players in multi-layered game with a plot line, props and characters.

"It's not like your normal paintball," said Mr. Charles "Damien" Allen, TAW Paintball owner. "The story [for this event] is based in 2335 A.D."

Eminent Fallout is set in the future in a distant world where two warring factions had nearly obliterated each other 40 years prior. When the fallout from the war has passed and the survivors have regrouped, the two factions, the United Terra Front and the Eastern Kreulen Contingency, resurfaced from their underground compounds to battle for supremacy - setting the stage for Operation: Eminent Fallout.

A third rogue faction, Echo 3 Echo, will also be on the field, 'shooting at everybody,' according to Mr. Allen.

"We don't play the game for them," Mr. Allen said. "We set up the canvas and lay out the brushes and paints. We lay out a sketch and allow the players to paint what they want."

Mrs. Kreulen sites a previous game where players used a pizza box to deliver a 'bomb' to an opposing team - an idea that was entirely their own.

Players can take part in 15 to 100 missions during the game. For example, a mission could require six to eight players to blow up a communications grid at 9:30 p.m., according to Mr. Allen. While on the mission four members of your team are taken out and you're shot in the leg, but your orders are that you must destroy the communications grid - at all costs.

"You'll be hearing more of your heartbeat than anything else," Mr. Allen said. "It's an adrenaline rush. It's a lot of fun."

Operation: Eminent Fallout is part of a larger plan Outdoor Recreation has to schedule four other scenario paintball events during the next year, including an event that lasts all weekend.

"Whether it's a one-day game or two-day game, it's a great way to step away from the stresses of what some call the mundane, everyday life and just exist," Mr. Allen said.

At the end of Operation: Eminent Fallout, competitors will vote on peer-to-peer recognition. There will also be a giveaway with $1,500 to $3,000 worth of prizes.

Base personnel interested in participating in this event must register by today.
