Log Dawgs sting Killer B's Published Jan. 18, 2007 By Staff Sgt. Candy Knight 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The 2007 basketball season got underway Jan. 16 as the 60th Logistics Readiness Squadron's Log Dawgs took on the 615th Contingency Response Wing's Killer B's. For the faithful Travis Sports readers, this article will not attempt to insult your intelligence by trying to give an in-depth description of the first 39 minutes of this game. The only way the first 39 minutes of this game can be described is that there was so many bricks thrown up during the game, contractors could've built a entire community of two-story homes. However, there were a few highlights that should be mention. The Killer B's stung first, opening the game with a 5-0 run in the first three minutes. The Log Dawgs battled back, on the strength of power forward Christopher Williams' 6 points, to take a 10- 8 lead with five minutes left in the first half. The Log Dawgs increased the lead to 19-14 by halftime. After making changes to their defensive schemes, the Log Dawgs used tough and smart defense to hold onto their lead until the final minute of the game when Killer B's point guard, Casey Tharp, hit a three-point prayer from 20 feet away to give his team a 29-27 lead. On the very next possession, Killer B's shooting guard, Chris Limbrick, fouled Williams hard, sending Williams to the free throw line with a chance to tie the game. Williams, an excellent free-throw shooter, hit both of his free throws, tying the game at 29 with 50 seconds left. The Dawgs, who had been out scored 15-12 during the second half, took the lead for good when Williams hit a wide-open jumper with 35 second to play, giving the Dawgs a 31-29 lead. The Dawgs added a Emil Conoles' free throw to increase their lead to 32-29 with 30 seconds left to play. The Killer B's never got the chance to tie the game, as their poor ball handing and crucial turnovers in the final thirty seconds cost them a chance to send the game into overtime. "This was a tough game, but we pulled it out," said Williams. "They exploited our weaknesses, but we played with heart and got the victory." "It's going to be a long season," said Log Dawgs' coach Joseph Mangum after his teams win. "We have to do a lot better if we are going to continue to win. It's a good thing a season is marked by how a team presses on when everyone else is trying to hold them down." In other action, the 60th Aerial Port Squadron defeated the 22nd Airlift Squadron's Airlifters 45-40. The 60th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron beat the 60th Medical Operations Squadron by a score of 46-34. The 349th Civil Engineer Squadron earned a 51-30 victory over the 571st Global Mobility Squadron and the DIF defeated the 573rd Global Support Squadron 65-57. Rounding out this week's action, those financial wizards from the 60th Comptroller Squadron bounced the 60th Component Maintenance Squadron 70-44. The season continues Monday when the 60th Services Squadron takes on the 573rd GSS, the 60th Communications Squadron battles the 60h CPTS and the 60th Operations Support Squadron looks to take out the 60th Medical Support Squadron.
