The 2006 federal tax season will be starting soon at Travis and the call for volunteers has already begun.

In February, the Travis Tax Center will open its doors and offer free tax assistance to active duty members, retirees and military family members with an identification card.

Volunteers are the heart of the tax center.

This is why the legal office is seeking the help of dedicated volunteers to become educated in tax preparation and assist fellow servicemembers and family members during a very stressful time of the year, while saving them a lot of money and time.

During the 2006 tax season, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance volunteers helped more than 3,100 people file tax returns, saving them thousands of dollars in preparation fees.
VITAs can be military members, family members or retirees.

They work in a central tax center and assist clients with the preparations of their tax returns.

The legal office is beginning its volunteer search now so an accurate count of volunteers can be determined and proper training can be provided.

Training for volunteers is currently scheduled for mid to late January.

The training requires volunteers to be able to commit to two weeks of classes to learn about federal and California taxes.
