Travis master sergeant punished under UCMJ Published June 19, 2006 60th AMW Staff Judge Advocate TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- An Airman was sentenced to four months confinement and reduction in rank to E-4 in court-martial proceedings here May 16. A Reserve master sergeant working for the 60th Aerial Port Squadron, was charged with one specification in violation of Article 128 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice: assault consummated by battery; and one specification in violation of Article 134 of the UCMJ: disorderly conduct. The maximum punishment for these offenses is 10 months confinement, reduction in rank to E-1, 2/3 forfeitures for 10 months and bad conduct discharge. The Airman acted in an unethical manner at the Base Exchange March 26. His disorderly conduct was witnessed on surveillance video by Army and Air Force Exchange Service store detectives who subsequently escorted the sergeant to the security office. There, the store detectives copied his identification card. The member then forced his way past the store detective (assault) and fled the area by foot. At the time he committed this crime, the Airman had more than 19 years of service behind him. “His conviction demonstrates that no one caught committing a crime is above prosecution or exempt from the need for good order and discipline in the Air Force,” said 1st Lt Thomas Franzinger, 60th Air Mobility Wing Judge Advocate, assistant trial council. “The Air Force will not tolerate the unjustified physical abuse by one of its members against anyone on the base. Workplace security remains a priority and will be enforced under the law.” The two AAFES store detectives who spotted the crime taking place on surveillance cameras were responsible for stopping and identifying the Airman. “Their actions were vital in leading to his eventual conviction,” said Lieutenant Franzinger. “Their vigilance should reassure shoppers that the BX employees are committed to ensuring their safety.”
