Summer youth program to begin June 12 Published June 2, 2006 American Red Cross - Travis Station TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The American Red Cross is once again sponsoring their popular Summer Youth program at Travis this year. Applications are now available to participate in the program, which begins June 12. Applications can be picked up from the information desks at David Grant USAF Medical Center or the base thrift shop. A youth-parent orientation is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Graduate Medical Education classroom, located on the fourth floor of DGMC. “Parents and youth receive a brief orientation, meet with some of the various department heads and have a chance to select their work site choices,” said Ms. Joan Kelley-Williams, ARC station manager at DGMC. “Youth are also able to take a free CPR class on the same day. Parents who have attended prior orientations may check in, but are not required to stay for the orientation,” Ms. Kelley-Williams added. All completed applications must be signed by a parent or guardian. Additionally, the American Red Cross Bay Area chapter’s annual Leadership Development Center will hold a leadership camp at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., from July 25 to 28. “LDC is a four-day, three-night leadership training program open to all bay area high school students who are interested in volunteering with the Red Cross,” explained Ms. Kelley-Williams. The LDC schedule includes CPR certification, leadership training, a public speaking session, preparedness education training; workshops on starting a Red Cross club, HIV/AIDS peer education and International Humanitarian Law; a talent show and disaster drill. “We would love to have all enthusiastic high school leaders entering grades 9- 12, interested in community service apply,” stated Ms. Kelley-Williams. “This will be covered at our Summer Youth Programs orientation.” Frequently Asked Questions: Q1: Do I have to attend all summer?
