Sexual assault prevention month kicks off Saturday Published April 6, 2006 TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Nationally, April is observed as Sexual Assault Awareness Month as a way to raise awareness about and promote prevention of sexual violence through special events and public education. This year the national SAAM slogan is “It’s About Time to Prevent Sexual Violence.” The Department of Defense theme for 2006 “SAAM is Sexual Assault Prevention … Begins With You.” The 2006 theme emphasizes the responsibility of every servicemember and those in leadership positions to prevent sexual assault by building a climate of respect in which sexual assault is not tolerated. The following is a list of upcoming Travis events: Sexual Violence Prevention Film Festival There will be viewings of sexual assault prevention and awareness videos offered every Tuesday and Thursday during SAAM in the military equal opportunity classroom. Self-Defense Training There will be free four-hour self-defense training seminars conducted by SafeQuest Solano 12:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. April 20 in the martial arts room of the Travis Fitness Center. For more information, call 424-1105. “Refuse to be a Victim” training There will be a free three-hour seminar taught by Fairfield Police Department 6 p.m. April 19 at the David Grant USAF Medical Center Auditorium. For reservations, contact Ms. Harmonee Ellis 424-7233. Operation Dorm Awareness Dorm awareness briefings will be conducted during the week of April 24-28 at the base theater. This is mandatory for dorm residents. The briefings will be segregated by gender. For more information, call 424-1105. Clothesline project The clothesline project is a vehicle for sexual assault survivors to express their emotions about the experience by decorating a t-shirt and hanging it in an exhibit. The clothesline project will be part of a “traveling” sexual assault awareness display. The following are the planned display areas: Commissary, Base Exchange, Sierra Inn Dining Facility, 60th Air Mobility Wing Headquarters Bldgs, Maintenance Group Atrium and David Grant USAF Medical Center.
