Travis hosts Pilot for a Day Published April 19, 2007 By 010407 TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The 9th Air Refueling Squadron from Travis AFB will host the Pilot for a Day program for a survivor of Lymphoma and a kidney transplant April 20. Simon Meyer, an 11-year-old from the San Francisco Bay Area, will be the guest of honor for the event. He and his family will tour the 9th ARS, KC-10 Flight Simulator, Boom Operator Trainer, Air Traffic Control tower and a KC-10 aircraft during his visit. The "Pilot for a Day" program originated at Randolph AFB, Texas in 1994. Initiated by Capt. Rory "Ox" Blackburn, the goals were to offer children with catastrophic illnesses a chance to experience a typical day as a United States Air Force pilot. Today, the "Pilot for a Day" program at Travis AFB offers deserving local area children a chance to experience a typical day as a USAF Pilot with the 60th AMW. The PFAD program is strictly voluntary and is funded by donations from military members and organizations from the local community. Children of all ages, military or civilian, are invited from the local community to participate. Many of the children invited to participate spend more time in hospitals than at home with their family. Media are invited to the Boom Operator Trainer portion of the day which is at Noon. Media should contact 1st Lt. Lindsey Hahn at 707-424-0139 or email her at Lindsey.hahn@travis.af.mil by 4:30 p.m. Thursday to RSVP. In order to make arrangements with the family, late RSVPs will not be accepted. -30-
